My name is Will Phalen. I live in Chicago and play with a group called Will Phalen and the Stereo Addicts.
Love the site! I thought you might like to hear my version of “Wake Up” by the Arcade Fire.
In Chicago, I participate in a songwriter’s forum called ‘The Song League’…every week each member of the League is to write a song, record it and by Sunday night or early Monday morning he or she must post that song online to share with the rest of the group. We’ve been doing this since last December and our focus had been on producing original material. Essentially, the League was like a deadline for all of us, designed to encourage us to produce material each week.
But for this latest round (we call them Semesters), we decided to up the ante: each week, not only must we contribute an original song, we must also contribute a cover song. Last night at 1 am I recorded this version of Wake Up using only ukulele, harmonica, beatbox, snaps and voice. It’s kind of raw, but I thought I’d let you hear it and see what you think.
My band Will Phalen and the Stereo Addicts plays Midwestern Folk Rock. You can hear our music at willphalen.com. We just released a record called Middle West and it’s available now at our webiste and on iTunes and Amazon.com. This year, I plan on recording a solo album consisting only of cover songs. My cover version of “Tonight”. Everything you can hear is me, apart from the drums. All the guitar work was done on my Fender electric guitar and I also translated one of the verses into French, hence the “Ce Soir” bit in the title, I did that mainly just to break it up a little. This is a brass cover of Coldplay’s “Hymn for the Weekend.” I recorded all trumpet, trombone, and horn parts and put them together. Then, I produced a music video to accompany the cover with the goal of capturing the small-town feeling of the area in which I live and expressing just how passionate I am for music. This took many, many hours to complete, as it was a one-man production; however, I am very happy with and proud of the result. Enjoy.
